|About Lisa and her Society Philosophies...
Who is not, but should be newsworthy today?
I think that, after 9/11 happened, our nation briefly remembered that it makes little sense to honor and elevate athletes and actors over and above true heroes- the firefighters and police and military, who risk their lives daily- and even doctors and nurses and emergency medical technicians, for example.
Somehow, we have drifted away from that realization again, and the television is full of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan stories.
In my heart of hearts, I believe that the ordinary people who do extraordinary things are the people we should be celebrating, and even ordinary people who are living their lives nobly. I like that idea that "charater is who you are when no one is looking". I would love to see the news media report more often on people who are trying to make the world better in some way. Who is making a difference at the local elementary school? Who volunteers at my local animal shelter? Who counsels rape victims at the hospital at 2 AM? These are the types of people I would like to hear about more often when I search out news in any form of media.
What current events or circumstances should receive more news coverage?
I'm saddened that there is so little outcry over the human rights violations in the world.
I'm saddened that there are so many children who need families and have not yet been adopted.
I'm saddened that domestic violence, peer violence among teenagers, suicide, drunk driving, and child abuse claim so many lives each year. I would like my news to educate my community about what needs to be changed in the world, and about what people can do to effect change on a local level.
Who is today's most absurd role model?
What cause do you believe in enough to take action?
The causes which stir me to action are those which involve human need.
I do care about the environment, and about animals (for example, I have supported CRES in the past), but when I have additional resources (in the forms of time, money, effort or ideas), my focus tends to be on people first.
For what causes have you taken action in the past?
Domestic violence, poverty, Hurricane Katrina, Bosnian refugee crisis, Amnesty International, CRES, etc.
What is the best book you've read about bettering the world?
Well, this may sound cheesy, but it's the Bible. I think every human being can be part of the problems or part of the solutions in our world.
Jesus said that all of the laws of Moses could be summed up in two laws: love God with all our heart, and love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
I honestly think the world would be transformed if more people loved their "neighbors" as much as they love themselves. Imagine the compassion and empathy that would engender! We would not be able to tolerate another human being suffering without wanting to intervene, if we loved them as we love ourselves. It's a powerful idea. Love is a powerful force for good.
